It is always a good idea when exploring to have a knowledgeable guide to help you traverse new lands and navigate unknown waters. For William Clark and Meriwether Lewis it was the Shoshone princess, Sacajawea, and her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, who served as interpreters on their expedition. Sir Edmund Hillary was aided in his quest to set foot on the summit of Everest by Nepalese Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay. And the Tahitian, Tupaia, lent his extensive knowledge of Pacific Ocean geography to British explorer and map maker, James Cook.
